It’s been a month since my last report. Fishing for most people was pretty tough in June. The water was coming up a foot to two feet a day. When that happens the fish aren’t where they usually are. My son Paul has a honey hole, fishing spot, that has produced 20 to 40+ stripers every trip throughout June. Now that July is here the water rising is slowing down, maybe 6 inches a day. I believe in another week or two it will stop coming up. The good news is there is water in the Castle Rock Cut. I went through the cut a week ago and my graph said there was one foot of water in most places, up to 2 feet in some places. I think water in the cut will be short lived. I believe by August we could see real boils happening, not slurps. That’s when you get out the top water lures. Striper fishing can be good if you find rocks or an island around 30 to 50 feet down and if there are fish on your graph throw out some anchovies, chum, drop your line down to the bottom then reel up a couple of feet from the bottom and wait. If no bites in 30 minutes then move on to the next spot. Once the water stops coming up and it clears up, the largemouth and smallmouth will be back in the shallows 3 to 10 feet deep and easier to find. I suggest using Senko’s in the back of coves where the tumble weeds have built up for the largemouth. Smallmouth will be on rocky points. I like using a double tail hula grub for the smallmouth. The fishing is going to get better and better as the summer goes on. Good luck!! I hope this was helpful.
